Solo Exhibition by Tyrown Waigana

October 5-28 2023

Artist’s Statement:

This solo expresses the concept of my practice, which is just me trying to make sense of the world around me and the more I try to figure something out the less it makes sense. I attach social nuances, insights, situations to fictional characters and make-believe events. This leads me to build myths and concepts for surreal worlds. I also try to ground my work with a sense of humour to add another conceptual layer to my work because I find a lot of things awkwardly funny. My practice is also very diverse with this show featuring painting, works on paper and sculpture. I’m interested in how the same broader concept is expressed through different materials. Hopefully, people can find things in my work that are very relatable and funny.

27 year old Wardandi Noongar and Ait Koedal (Torres Strait Islander) multidisciplinary artist and graphic designer Tyrown Waigana has combined his talents as a painter, sculptor and graphic designer to harmoniously produce an inspiring solo exhibition.

The works radiate Waigana’s understanding of human frailties and foibles in a manner imbued with the unique talent of this emerging artist. There are social nuances, behavioural insights and fictional characters confronted by make belief events all unashamedly on display.
