Shane Pickett is recognised as one of Australia’s leading Indigenous artists. Often, when speaking about his artwork, he acknowledged the impact of his mother Dorcas Pickett who taught  him about his culture. Shane attributed much of his success to her maternal guidance. Equally, Shane acknowledged the support and love provided to him by his wife Violet from the time of his teen years until his untimely death. These two women were the bedrock on which Shane was able to build his successful career in the arts. Their contributions truly embrace the  phrase ‘because of her we can’. These two woman informed, encouraged and enabled Shane Pickett  to become the remarkable artist and cultural leader for the community.
