BIRDS OF PARADISE

Artist Statement: Birds of Paradise

My name is Matthew. I have been drawing ever since I can remember. This exhibition is called 'Birds of Paradise' . It is called this because I have happy thoughts about birds which flow into colours, shapes and proportions that flow into paintings of birds. Some of the inspirations that transfer into these paintings come from my childhood and teenage years in Kirkstall and the birds that came to the garden particularly the parrots.

My life as an artist started in 2005 when I commenced studying Art, Craft and Design at South West TAFE. When I look back at my earlier works I see the same colours and shapes and I feel proud that my works have developed and progressed over the years. Still many of my old influences flow into my work whilst new influences tend to flow into my work from travel.

I am proud of my recent achievements as an artist. Some of these include the 2021 Archibald Prize Finalist at Art Gallery of New South Wales, being selected for Melbourne Now at the National Gallery of Victoria 2023, being a Sir John Sulman Prize finalist and Wynne Prize finalist at Art Gallery of Art Gallery of New South Wales.

I continued my wildlife theme in 2023 with a solo exhibition for the Rising Festival Melbourne titled ‘The Wallabies’ consisting of 20 wallaby sculptures.

I am proud that this exhibition Birds of Paradise is my 29th solo exhibition.
