Artist Statement:

Sapurr Ar Kubil is a short phrase from Kala Lagaw Ya, Western Island language from Zenadth Kes which refers to bats (flying foxes) at night.

Pteropus conspicillatus or the Spectacled Flying Fox is an endangered megabat species that lives in tropical rainforest areas in the north and north-eastern regions of Queensland, particularly in areas north of Cardwell, on Cape York Peninsula between Kulla, the McIlwrait Range and Kutini-Payamu, the Iron Range, in Torres Strait and throughout Papua New Guinea.

A dramatic loss of numbers of the Spectacled Flying Fox means that the species now sits on the Endangered Animal list. This is due in part to loss of habitat as result of large-scale clearing of land for sugar, grazing and urban development as well as death due to a severe heatwave in Queensland in late 2018.
