Betty was born in 1960 at Karunji Station where her father was a stockman, She was born in the bush whilst her parents were on a walkabout. She came to Kalumburu Mission Convent where she was looked after by Ingnatia Ganwalla and the nuns at the age of three after the death of her mother. She subsequently worked in the mission baking bread and at the Kalumburu school as a teaching aide.  Betty currently lives in Kalumburu with her family.
